Attorney General Looks To Strengthen Human Trafficking Forfeiture Laws

Sioux Falls, SD: Sex trafficking has become a forefront issue in South Dakota. So much so that Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether declared January "Human Trafficking Awareness and Action" month.

Under the South Dakota state law, a person who is convicted of specific human trafficking forfeits the profits and assets associated with their sex crimes.

But Jackley says that's not the case in federal court.

"I'll be asking Legislature when prosecutions are conduced jointly with those state, local and federal authorities, to let them use state forfeiture statues in or to take away profits as well as assets used in sex crimes," says Jackley.
