Assistant state's attorney says Frederick County human trafficking case could be tried federally

A Hagerstown man who faced trial on human trafficking charges in Frederick County might have his case heard in U.S. District Court instead, according to local prosecutors.

Richard Dane Small, 31, of the 400 block of Reynolds Avenue, faces two counts of human trafficking. Police say they discovered text messages between Small and two teenage girls that indicated that he was prostituting them.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tammy Leache said on Monday in Frederick County Circuit Court, when Small’s trial was scheduled to begin, that local prosecutors would not pursue the charges against him if the U.S. attorney takes over the case.
