RICHMOND -- By the time 17-year-old "Jane Doe" met the 30-year-old man who will soon stand trial on charges of trafficking, raping and using zip ties to restrain her, she had been a prostituted person for nearly seven years.
The girl's story is typical of trafficking victims: Her father physically abused her and forced her into sex labor when she was "10 or 11 years old." She later became a foster child but continued to be a prostituted victim and worked for multiple pimps over the years, she said under oath during a February preliminary hearing.
She said eventually she met Troy Brewer, 30, a Richmond resident who was arrested in January and charged with human trafficking, kidnapping for ransom, rape, assault with a deadly weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted, and his trial has been set for June 27.
