IT HAPPENS HERE: Human trafficking not just third-world problem

When news broke earlier this month that a woman allegedly had sold her teen niece from Honduras to a Comal County man, people responded with outrage.
What could be worse than someone neglecting to protect a young family member, dependent upon others and living in a strange land? How could anyone do such an unfathomable thing, and what would happen to the teen girl and her baby the much older man is accused of fathering? Who would be there to help?
“She is in (Texas Department of Child Protective Services) custody, in CPS care. It’s a case that we handled several weeks ago when it first came in,” said Mary Walker, media specialist for the Texas Region 8 Department of Family Protective Services. “There’s really not a whole lot more to tell. This was something that apparently CPS has been handling for quite some time.”
