Conversations are abuzz about corruption in politics. While the top-of-the-pecking-order candidates monopolize our attention, our well-fed local candidates are benefitting from the general apathy of their constituents. This month, we may elect a judge in Miami who has business stakes in “sex-themed” hotels that attract prostitution and whose family owns a hotel that is, according to the State Attorney’s Office, a location where child sex trafficking occurred.
It seems this conflict of interest would negatively impact votes, however, the Knight Foundation found that only 1 in 5 eligible voters show up for mayoral elections, and I’m willing to bet that the one that is showing up has a vested interest in their candidate’s reign. The unfortunate truth is that while the President of the United States may hold nuclear codes, local elected officials actually hold much more direct influence over our lives, and we should be paying attention (and voting on August 30th).
